What causes diabetes?

What-causes-diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes:

·        Damage and destruction of the ß cells in the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas responsible for producing insulin

·         Major cause is an autoimmune destruction as islet cell antibodies are found in the serum. Other autoimmune disorders such as coeliac disease or hypothyroidism are more frequent.

·         Polygenic genetic susceptibility. Such individuals have detectable islet cell antibodies but not all develop type 1 diabetes.

·         Other causes include acute and chronic pancreatitis and pancreatectomy

Type 2 diabetes: the most common form of diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glycaemia:

·         Environmental factors, obesity and sedentary life style (Inactivity and being overweight both increase the risk of type 2 diabetes)

·         Insulin resistance

·         Family history and genetic susceptibility: It appears that people who have family members who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are at greater risk for developing it themselves

·         Advancing age: With age the risk of type 2 diabetes increases
